The First
Unitarian Church of Rochester: (www.rochesterunitarian.org)
is a growing liberal religious community of more than 1,300 adults, children, and
youth, whose members, seeking truth and meaning, work together and individually
for social justice. The arts in general, and music in
particular, are central to our Celebration of Life worship, inspiring and
guiding us with beauty, joy and love. We currently have three vibrant services
weekly, one on Saturday evening and two on Sunday morning. Our Music and Arts
Ministry is wide-ranging and engages over 200 of our members. Located in
Rochester, NY, we are privileged to live in a center of exceptional music and
arts in the US. We dream of finding a
Music Director who will build on the legacy of our current music program and
who will bring not only his/her talent, but also vision and leadership to the
music for our two Sunday services. Our ideal candidate will enable us to
continue our current musical repertoire which ranges from Bach and Beethoven to
Bernstein, Corigliano and Whitacre,
as well as Jazz, Gospel and musical theater. The Music Director will join a
ministerial team that is committed to integrating music and the arts into
worship, and as such, he/she will need strong collaborative skills and
enthusiasm for being part of the worship team. While the Music Director does
not need to be a Unitarian Universalist, she/he will need to be committed to offering
music that embodies Unitarian Universalist values. He/she will participate in
the activities and conferences of the Unitarian Universalist Musicians Network.

• Provide or supervise Organ/Piano music at both Sunday
services

as other ad hoc ensembles and soloists
• An active drama group that produces regular major
productions and smaller skits for worship
• A discretionary annual Sunday morning music budget of
$10,000
• A musical library with over 700 sacred and secular pieces
as well as about 50 extended pieces with orchestral scores such as Bach’s Magnificat, John Rutter’s Requiem
and John Corigliano’s Fern Hill
• A tradition of 2 “Choir Sundays” each year where a major
choral work of the Music Director's choosing makes up the service and is
accompanied by professional instrumentalists from within the church and the
larger community.
• A tradition of at least one paid section leader/assistant
director
• A premier pipe organ (19 rank Wicks organ, redesigned by Kerner & Merchant organ builders, with additions by
Parsons organ builders)
